Snowflake Wants Its Agents to Keep Working After Everyone Logs Off

What happened. Snowflake used its Expedition 2026 event on 3 November 2026 to push enterprise AI agents beyond answering prompts and into persistent work. The announcements cover its two agents — CoCo, the coding agent for data teams, and CoWork, the personal work agent for knowledge workers — plus the governance layer that is supposed to keep them safe inside a company.
What is actually available now. The distinction between launched and forthcoming matters here, and Snowflake’s own release labels make it clear. Generally available now: CoCo Automations, which let data teams schedule repeated workflows; the Async Agent API; Skills and Plugin Sharing; and CoCo Cloud Agents, which run CoCo in an isolated environment Snowflake manages instead of on an engineer’s laptop, so sessions can keep running after the engineer logs off — while production changes still require a person to decide. In public preview: Snowflake for Slack, CoCo for Excel and Sheets, and Snowflake Mobile, plus Cortex AI Gateway Tools. In private preview: Business Ontology and dynamic model routing.
The always-on bots are not here yet. The most autonomous-sounding pieces — CoCo and CoWork Bots, described as always-on AI coworkers that work in the background, act directly in the tools teams already use, and check in only when work is ready or a human decision is needed — are marked as coming soon to private preview, not generally available. Any report describing them as launched overstates the announcement.
The governance pitch. Two new pieces frame the strategy. Business Ontology, part of Snowflake Horizon Catalog, lets organisations approve definitions for core business concepts so agents ground their answers in shared, pre-approved meanings rather than guessing — Snowflake’s product chief Christian Kleinerman framed it as the difference between agents that guess and agents that know coming “down to data.” Cortex AI Gateway is the checkpoint every agent in a company passes through, adding abuse detection, tracing, cost governance and model routing. Snowflake says CoCo is used by more than 9,100 accounts and CoWork by more than 5,800, measured as the average of the last four weeks of the quarter ended 31 July 2026, and that it serves more than 14,500 enterprises overall — company-reported figures.
Why it matters. Snowflake is not building its own frontier models; it is betting that the winning enterprise agent layer is the one that best connects models from OpenAI, Anthropic and others to a company’s governed data and access rules. If agents are going to keep working unsupervised, the company that controls the definitions, the permissions and the audit trail has a strong claim on that market — but the always-on future it previewed is still, for now, a preview.
